Monday's mp3: Gigi's Gud Fella

Among the myriad projects in which Bill Laswell has a hand, I find few more compelling than Ethiopian singer Ejigayehu "Gigi" Shibabaw. They have worked together in Tabla Beat Science, and on Laswell's own albums, including 2002's Book of Exit. Her voice is at once exotic and accessible. It just fits.

The original "Gud Fella" appeared on Gigi's self-titled 2001 album. A limited-release EP was issued in 2002, including the original mix and five remixes of the song by Restless Soul and former Fela drummer and Afrobeat pioneer Tony Allen.

There's a strange web of information filling in around me and it's saying --- Bill Laswell.
How strange that I've been hearing about him from so many different sources in the past 2 weeks!
GREAT song, great singer. GIGI and Book of Exit have just moved toward the top of my to-buy list.

BTW, why can't I post comments using FireFox? The visual verification is always invisible when I use FireFox. Odd.

My current theory is that "Bill Laswell" is actually the name not of a person, but of a collective of musicians. I think there may be a half-dozen of them or so, as they have their fingers in so many projects, from jazz to dub to world music. Either that, or he's found a way to not sleep. Ever.

No idea why you're having trouble commenting with Firefox -- haven't heard of such a problem before, and I -- at this very moment -- am commenting using Firefox (on a Mac). I wish I didn't have to use the word verification, but it seems without it the comments fill up with ads for male organ enlargment drugs. Sigh...
