[mp3] Tangle Eye: "
from the album Alan Lomax's Southern Journey Remixed
Read more about Lomax at last year's birthday post.
In thinking about generations of world music, we got to thinking about famous parent-offspring musicians. Although many global musical traditions are passed through family lines, it seems rare that more than one generation attains real global prominence in music. I made a quick list (and admittedly, "global prominence" is a stretch in some cases):
- The Kutis (Fela and Femi)
- The Shankars (Ravi and Anoushka)
- The Velosos (Caetano and Moreno)
- The Farka Toures (Ali and Vieux)
- The Markovics (Boban and Marko)
- The Marleys (Bob and, well, his many offspring)
4 comments:
Erguner (Kudsi and Suleyman, albeit brothers)
Fateh Ali Khan (Ustad, Nusrat & the whole family!)
Waterson-Carthy (Martin, Norma, & Eliza)
Wainwright (Loudon, Rufus, Martha)
Thompson (Richard, Linda, Teddy ... these English folkies like to keep it in the family!)
The Gilbertos (João and Bebel)
The Sinatras (Frank and Nancy)
It might also be possible to add Norah Jones (née Geethali Norah Jones Shankar) to the Shankar family.

Nick and Paul: Thanks for the suggestions! Don't know how I could have overlooked the Ali Khans and the Gilbertos.
Will save the siblings, Erguner and other, for another day. I can think of another handful of them right off. And as for the others... I think you might have gotten carried away with one part of our theme (generations) and forgotten the other (world music). So nix on the Sinatras, Wainrights, Thompsons, and Waterson-Carthys, at least in this context. Same for Norah, at least until she ethnics-up her offerings a little more.
Cheers, all!
